Access to basic technologies
Digital access describes the ability of individuals in Makhanda to fully participate in the digital world by having reliable internet connectivity, suitable devices, and the necessary digital literacy skills. Access to digital infrastructure is crucial for opportunities in education, employment, healthcare, and social cohesion. However, unequal access or the digital divide can deepen existing social and economic inequalities, leaving behind those in rural areas, low-income communities, or underserved groups. Ensuring widespread digital access is essential for creating a more inclusive and equitable society where everyone has the opportunity to thrive in this increasingly digital world.
Please Read the Following Before Making Use of the Social Innovation Hub Digital Access Services
SIH Information Booklet and RU Information Technology Services Acceptible Use Policy for Internet access.

Digital Resource Library
Communit partners and university staff can lease basic ICT devices such as laptops, cameras, tablets and audio equipment for up to one week to use as part of CE-related and social innovation projects.
- Leases are up to one-week to meet the needs of all partners
- Three days is needed before a request will be approved/denied. Account for this in your planning
- An ID document and contact information is needed for all new Visitors
- A Form must be submitted before a request will be considered
- The library is not available to undergraduate/postgraduate students to work on their studies (we do not have the capacity unfortunately)
To lease equipment, community-university partners, Rhodes Unviersity staff, student volunteers and CE practitioners can complete a Form to make a request for equipment. Approval depends on relevance to social innovation and community engagement and availability of devices.
Visitors must read and understand the Terms of Use when they submit the Form.
Mobile Hubs
Once-off 'pop-up' computer labs can also be arranged at any site in Makhanda to run workshops or training projects. For example, Vulindlela leases a mobile lab of 20 laptops for learners to submit Tiertiary applications each year.
Mini Hubs
Leveraging partnerships and collaboration across Makhanda, the Social Innovation Hub sets up Mini Hubs for access across Makhanda. Mini Hubs are independant computer labs that are supported by the Social Innovation Hub. We facilitate computer donations, upgrade PCs, update software, set up PCs and provide training and consultation on training programmes to help the Mini Hub get traction.
Mini Hubs are made possible with the support of Rhodes 欧洲杯足球网_外围买球app推荐-投注|官网 IT&S. In 2024, GBS Bank and IT Solutions contributed to 10 Mini Hubs.
