The French Studies Section aims at hosting at least one event per year in order to bring our students together to celebrate the French language and Francophone culture. It is important for our students to converse with each other in French and these events are wonderful opportunities to share knowledge and experiences. These events vary from year to year and are subject to the discretion of the French Studies Subject Head.

French Club 2025: First Event of the Year on the 12 March 2025
On Wednesday, 12 March, the French and Francophone Studies hosted its first French Club event of the year. Students from all levels from French 1 to Honours, gathered to take part in an exciting and interactive session celebrating French and Francophone culture.

During the June Holidays, Imkhitha Macanda “Immy”, a French honours student, embarked on a transformative journey to Strasbourg, France, for a short course in French diplomacy and diplomatic studies, sponsored by Campus France. Strasbourg is situated near the border with Germany, Strasbourg is renowned for its blend of French and German influences, reflected in its architecture, cuisine, and cultural identity.
Lecture on “Pays sans Chapeau” by Prof. Arthur Mukenge: Exploring Autobiography, Autofiction and beyond
On April 10, 2025, a thought-provoking lecture was held at the School of Language Department, where Professor Arthur Mukenge delivered an insightful presentation on the book "Pays sans Chapeau" (translated as "A Country Without a Hat") by the renowned Haitian author Dany Laferrière. Laferrière, a significant figure in Francophone and French literature, is known for weaving themes of nostalgia, memory and societal challenges into his works.
French 1 Students’ Semester Excursion to Port Elizabeth (Gqeberha) / Alliance française
On Friday, May 9th, French 1 students embarked on an enriching semester excursion to Port Elizabeth (Gqeberha), hosted at Alliance française. The day began with a “Bla Bla” activity, where students were paired with French-speaking individuals to practice their language skills. This interactive session allowed students to engage in conversation, using the vocabulary they had learned throughout the term, enhancing their fluency and confidence in French.

The occasion was no ordinary event; it was a commemoration of the life and contributions of the Congolese writer, Henri Lopes – a man whose influence transcended the realms of literature into diplomacy and politics. Henri Lopes, renowned for his literary works, diplomatic finesse, and political engagement, left an indelible mark on the African intellectual landscape. His multifaceted persona, encompassing roles as a writer, diplomat, and politician, garnered admiration and reverence from scholars and writers across the continent.
